Seeing the Redwoods
Humboldt Redwoods State Park
After a somewhat laid back morning, we headed out to explore the Humboldt Redwoods State Park. As we drove down 101 we came across the Avenue of the Giants auto tour and decided to take that route through the park. We have been through the redwoods before and as before we were pretty awe-struck by these magnificent trees. As we drove through, we stopped and explored some small trails and turnouts.
The day was pretty laid back, we probably only got a few miles in of hiking but some of the stops were pretty interesting and we learned a lot about the history of the area dating back to the time before humans were on the planet. Learning about how humans cleared these massive trees was disturbing, but learning about the actions of a few people and their efforts to preserve this area was amazing. As it turns out, just 4% of the redwoods that had been present at one time now remain.
We visited the visitor center before returning to our trailer for a quiet evening.
