Spring Tulips
The Skagit Valley has an Annual Tulip Festival that we had never experienced so we decided to take an early spring trip to check it out. We originally booked Monday through Friday at a Thousand Trails in the area, then decided to leave a day earlier so we arranged a Harvest Host stay at Shawn O’Donnells. Day 1 ~ April 10
When we arrived at the La Conner Thousand Trails RV Park we had reserved, we discovered that over half the park was in disrepair so we chose to go to the Mt Vernon Thousand Trails where we have stayed before We stayed in Site A-1. After checking in and setting up, we went for a drive to check out the Tulip Route. We ended up stopping at Roozengaarde and walked around the facility checking out the fields. As it turns out the tulips were a bit late this year and the daffodils were the stars of the show.
It appeared that the crowds get quite large for this festival when we saw the number of honey buckets and the traffic/parking arrangements that were in place. As it was, there were very few people when we were there due to the late blooms and not great weather.
Day 2 ~ April 11
We drove the short drive to Bellingham today. Bellingham never disappoints. We had lunch at Avenue Bread & Cafe before doing a walkabout along the Bayfront Trail. We stoppe at Whatcom Falls Park before heading back to the campground.
Day 3 ~ April 12
Today we decided to see if the Cherry Blossoms were still out in Seattle at the UW Campus. We took the tandem to Bothell and rode from Bothell Landing to the UW Campus. The trees were still in bloom although not as vibrant as they apparently had been a week ago. The ride was great, as always, on the Burke-Gilman Trail. We returned to our campground and enjoyed a quiet finish to the day in our trailer.
Day 4 ~ April 13
For our last day on this short trip, we drove to Anacortes, another of our favorite haunts. We parked near the old trains station and walked over to the waterfront. Form there we walked the trail to the Cap Sante viewpoint. WE have been to the view point on previous visits, but this was the first time we walked the short trail to the top. After Cap Sante, we had lunch at The Secret Cove which was ok but ridiculously expensive. The restaurant facility is moderate with a decent view. We finished the day with a walk through the campground.
